How to wash hand block print cotton bedsheets

Printed cotton lasts for years with a little care. Most problems, faded colour, stains from colour running, a stiff feel, come from the first few washes.
The first three washes
- Wash separately in cold water. A little colour release is normal for printed cotton.
- Use a mild liquid detergent. Skip bleach and stain removers.
- Do not soak the sheet for long.
Drying
- Dry in the shade, inside out. Strong sun is the main cause of faded prints.
- Take it off the line while slightly damp if you plan to iron.
Ironing and storing
- Iron on the reverse at medium heat.
- Store folded in a dry cupboard, away from direct light.
If colour runs onto another sheet
Rewash the stained piece straight away in cold water with a mild detergent, before it dries. Then keep the printed sheet separate for its next few washes.
